The style of painting produced in Flanders during the 17th century is known as Flemish Baroque. This style was produced between about , when the Dutch Republic split from the Habsburg Spain regions of the south, until about , when the Habsburg rule ended after the death of King Charles II.

    The origins of Flanders lay in the pagus Flandrensis, an area composed of Brugge (Bruges) and its immediate environs under the administration of the Frankish empire. At first Flandrensis was an inconspicuous district, but beginning in the 9th century, a remarkable line of Flemish counts succeeded in erecting a quasi-independent state on the borders between the French and German kingdoms. 02 This innovative book presents a fresh view of fifteenth-century Netherlandish art and the significance of its contributions to contemporary Italian art, notably in such areas as oil painting, landscape, and portraiture.
